By the end of WW2 it was clear the worst had not happened and later that communism would score no easy triumph. I think you are right - the key is to resist them to the death. I find that helpful - I never saw it quite so directly. Their effort is by definition total...half measures don't work. We failed to truly absorb the real lesson of the Holocaust and WW2 - namely, totalitarianism, in all forms, must be fought to the death, with extreme prejudice, using any and all means available.
